Despite opposition from his crew and foul weather captain Willem van der Decken set sail from The Cape of Good Hope, the wind carrying his infamous words: “God nor the devil will stop me. I will sail around the Cape!” All that remains of him and his crew is legend, although, many still whisper that the Flying Dutchman continues to sail, as a ghost ship, forever more trying to sail around the Cape of Storms.

A theatrical interpretation of the world famous legend, MichaelandCaja’s telling of The Flying Dutchman is filled with rich imagery and fun characters. The 8+ version takes approximately half an hour and links perfectly to themes of 17th century trade, VOC (East India Trading Co.) and the Golden Age. Additionally the show offers a well-rounded base to discuss the origin of legends in general, their ‘truth’ and the cultural and historical perspectives that are connected to it.
